In this post I am letting the pictures do the talking.  I have long enjoyed collecting school (and other) certificates from the London County Council.  For some reason, I always find myself strangely moved by them – they offer little glimpses into the proud and hard earned achievements of persons unknown.

And then there are the designs themselves: rather grand and rich in symbolism at the beginning of the First World War, and becoming altogether simpler affairs as the austerity of the Twenties set in.

Enjoy!

We start with a forerunner of the London County Council, the School Board for London…

01 SLB Exam certificate 1887

And while the next one doesn’t set the pulse racing…

02 LCC General Ability certificate 1913

…imagine if you had received one of the following…

03 LCC Attendance Certificate 1915-1604 LCC Good conduct certificate 1915-1605 LCC Good conduct certificate 1916-17a08 LCC Scipture certificate 1917a09 LCC Scripture certificate 1917

And then simpler styles gained favour…

06 LCC Good conduct certificate 1917-18 0107 LCC Good conduct certificate 1917-18 0310 LCC Good conduct certificate 1918-19 0211 LCC Scripture certificate 1925-2612 LCC Scripture certificate 1932-3313 LCC Swimming Certificate 1932-3314 LCC First Aid Certificate 1935
